Philippina “Pina” Bausch was born in 1940 in Germany. She was a dancer, choreographer, ballet teacher, and ballet and theater director. She is considered a pioneer and significant figure of contemporary international dance.
At age 19, she was admitted to the Juilliard School in New York and became a dancer for the Metropolitan and the New York City Opera. She returned to Germany in 1961, where she worked continuously with her theater dance group until her sudden death in 2009 while developing the piece, “Como el Musguito en la Piedra ay, si, si, si”, a fragment from the song “Volver a los 17” by the Chilean singer-songwriter Violeta Parra, who inspired Pina on her last visit to Chile.
Pina’s work is classified as theater dance. It is based on the creation of brief episodes of dialogue and action focused on surreal situations, the use of the body and the relationships between it, the stage and the costumes, and it often involves the public and introducing them to the presentation.
“As a lover of music, art, culture, and dance have never ceased to be part of my artistic path. Thanks to this, I was fortunate to work for several years with the group “Integro” as a graphic artist and musician. Here, I learned a lot about direction and light with the master, Oscar Naters, and about dance with the notable Ana Zavala. She is the reason why Pina was a constant in my permanent review of her work and the graphic pieces they developed for her; they were incredibly pure. Her worldwide legacy is undeniable. I have no doubt that Pina Bausch is still the starting point for many dance lovers.” –Cherman
