When I think about Carlos Gardel, the two things that come to mind are tango and Argentina. In actuality, Gardel’s birthplace is uncertain. Some say that Charles Romuald Gardel was born in France. Others say that Carlos Gardel was born in Uruguay, around 1883 and 1890, and became an Argentine citizen in 1923.

Gardel was a singer, songwriter, and film actor. His career during the first half of the 20th century had worldwide success, including tours in Europe, North America, and Latin America as a singer and actor. His essential role in the development and dissemination of tango and his status as the best performer in the history of his musical genre will never be forgotten.

Carlos Gardel tragically died in the collision of two planes at the Olaya Herrera airport (formerly known as “Las Playas” Aerodrome)during takeoff in the city of Medellín, Colombia, on June 24, 1935. Today, many tango enthusiasts believe Gardel is still with us. Mysterious stories accompanied his death, and there are several legends that believe that Gardel is still alive.

“In the 70s, I took two separate trips with my father and younger brother to the north of the country along the coast, full of cassettes, songs, comics, and sketchbooks. Traveling with my father was always the ultimate adventure. In the late afternoon, when the night caught us on the road, I was my father’s co-pilot and responsible for making sure we didn’t run out of gasoline. At nightfall, my old man put Gardel on, and with my father’s heated singing, I would fall into a deep sleep. It was for and by my father that I drew Gardel, whom I consider an icon of Latin American popular culture. Sometimes we would ask my old man to put “Caminito,” and the three of us would sing. Some years ago, I also had my own copy, and from time to time, I catch myself listening to the “Zorzal Criollo,” tremendous Gardel!” –Cherman
