This piece pays tribute to the Gigante de Llusco,” an original image by grand photographer Martín Chambi. Cherman says that he’s always seen this character as an alter ego of Peru’s greatness.

The three-piece collection was created for one of the largest and most important exhibitions of the artist’s career, held during Peru’s national holiday festivities and the classification of Perú to the Soccer World Cup after 36 years.

This collection asks the following questions: How do we Peruvians see ourselves? Are we really in those countless fashionable “selfies”? Do we see ourselves reflected in our culture, our reality, our society?

The exhibition featured more than 200 pieces on national identity. The three main serigraphy pieces were made with a special gold and silver color, exquisitely hand printed by the great silkscreen printer Julio Soto. Some details can’t be seen with the naked eye but speak for themselves in the right light.

This collection represents the three commandments of the Incan Empire: don’t be a thief, don’t be a liar, don’t be lazy! (Ama Sua, Ama Llulla, and Ama Quella in Quechua). For Cherman, these three principles are perhaps lost by Peruvians who don’t want to see their own identity, so he decided to add a fourth commandment, ÁMATE (love yourself) … “Do we really love ourselves, Perú?
