Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón, a Mexican painter of international significance, was born on July 6, 1907. Daughter of the German photographer Guillermo (Wilhelm) Khalo and Matilde Calderón from Mexico. Her work, which consists mostly of self-portraits, revolves around her own life and experiences. She was also influenced by the work of the painter Diego Rivera, whom Frida married twice.

It was at the age of 18, in 1925 when Frida suffered a severe accident that fractured her spine, ribs, clavicle, pelvic bone, and right leg. This accident required a long recovery and at least 32 operations. During this time is when Frida began to paint. She also struggled with the aftermath of polio, which she contracted as a child. In 1926, she painted his first self-portrait, which started a dynamic that would continue for the rest of her life. Her paintings reflected events in her life and what she felt towards them and her sense of identity, which also reflected in her clothing.

Frida and Diego were part of the social, political, and artistic life of their time, breaking social patterns and structures.

Frida Kahlo died at 47, after suffering from many physical and emotional problems. During her later years, she wrote poems in her diaries related to pain and suffering. Frida’s remains are preserved in the Blue House of Coyoacán (Frida Kahlo Museum), which also saw her birth. The last words in her diaries were, “I look forward to the departure and hope never to return.”
