Known as the “Gentleman of the Seas,” he is perhaps the greatest heroic emblem post-independence. A Peruvian military man and admiral of the Peruvian Navy, a hero of the Pacific War, and in charge of the Monitor Huáscar battleship, Grau gave his life for his country in the naval combat of Angamos. Miguel Grau’s stories highlight his bravery and chivalry, the latter reflected in the gesture of sending a heartfelt letter to the wife of a fallen enemy.
“The image I have of him is with his classic posture and on his mast, with the sun reflected in his seas … it is likely that many of my “Graus” have been taken from the paintings of Ms. Etna Velarde. During the times I visited her workshop, I remember seeing her make an oil painting of Grau that was over 6 feet tall. The quality of her work was astonishing…” —Cherman
