John Winston Lennon was born in Liverpool, the United Kingdom, in 1940. Lennon was a singer, songwriter, peace activist, and founder of the musical phenomenon, The Beatles. He, along with The Beatles, revolutionized popular music in the 1960s. On December 8, 1980, he was shot and killed by an obsessed fan in The Dakota, New York.
“The day Lennon died was super weird. Although I was a boy and couldn’t fully comprehend what had happened, it was hard knowing someone had killed him that way. I remember that it was difficult to understand. Lennon had just released the Double Fantasy album that we listened to non-stop, even though we would skip Yoko’s songs. Much of my childhood, we had spent traveling with my old man, listening to The Beatles at full volume in the car. The craziest thing is that Lennon is still alive in some way because, over the years, we listen more and more to The Beatles and Lennon. My brother and I are fans of the song ‘Mother’. The last thing I acquired was the shirt from the New York concert, which I haven’t wore yet.” –Cherman
