José Olaya is another one of Perú’s popular heroes, a fisherman from the district of Chorillos. Not much is known about his origin or family. What is known is that this brave fisherman skirted the shores of the coast, carrying secret messages hidden within his catch, as an emissary of the independence forces between Lima and the district of Callao. Olaya was discovered, tortured, and finally murdered in 1823. Despite being tortured, he never betrayed his own. He is considered a patriotic and popular emblem, whose values and courage spreads throughout Perú’s coast.
In his close relationship with the comics and the characters of the history of Perú, Cherman describes Olaya as “some kind of Peruvian Aquaman, a superhero of the seas.“
