A professional military man, Bolognesi rejoined the Peruvian Army when he was well over 60 years of age during the Pacific War. Colonel Bolognesi defended Arica from the Chilean forces during the battle of the same name, without giving up, and despite the disadvantage in arms and men. His determination and courage are summed up in his famous phrase, which is perhaps one of the most emblematic phrases in the history of Perú, “I have sacred duties to fulfill and I will carry them out until the last cartridge is burned.”
