Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón, a Mexican painter of international significance, was born on July 6, 1907. Daughter of the German photographer Guillermo (Wilhelm) Khalo and Matilde Calderón from Mexico. Her work, which consists mostly of self-portraits, revolves around her own life and experiences. She was also influenced by the work of the painter Diego Rivera, whom Frida married twice.
It was at the age of 18, in 1925 when Frida suffered a severe accident that fractured her spine, ribs, clavicle, pelvic bone, and right leg. This accident required a long recovery and at least 32 operations. During this time is when Frida began to paint. She also struggled with the aftermath of polio, which she contracted as a child. In 1926, she painted his first self-portrait, which started a dynamic that would continue for the rest of her life. Her paintings reflected events in her life and what she felt towards them and her sense of identity, which also reflected in her clothing.
Frida and Diego were part of the social, political, and artistic life of their time, breaking social patterns and structures.
Frida Kahlo died at 47, after suffering from many physical and emotional problems. During her later years, she wrote poems in her diaries related to pain and suffering. Frida’s remains are preserved in the Blue House of Coyoacán (Frida Kahlo Museum), which also saw her birth. The last words in her diaries were, “I look forward to the departure and hope never to return.”
“The biggest icon of popular culture, Latin-America, and world art, Frida, remains practically perennial in everyday history. She is a historical emblem of the feminist fight despite her love and conflictive history with Diego Rivera. Frida’s legacy knows no limits, and over time her work and image have turned her into the most popular feminine icon of Latin origin in contemporary history. Frida rubbed shoulders with characters such as Breton; Picasso, Duchamp, Kandinski admired her. She was a woman marked by her own revolution and a marked relationship with the tragedy that led her to spend a long time leading a lone life. Is there no passion without sacrifice? “Why do I have feet if I have wings to fly.” –Cherman
